Chalkboard Message T-shirts DIY

These chalkboard message T-shirts, were ridiculously quick and easy to make, and went down a treat at my daughters 10th birthday party.  We made T-shirts for last years party (see details here) that Abbis friends still wear all the time.

She was very keen to make something similar this year  - (aaaaargh the pressure !), and we invited 15 girls, so it had to be something cheap and easy to mass produce.

We bought cheap t-shirts on line for a couple of pounds each, and got our craft on!

This was the equipment we needed:

- T-shirts

- Freezer paper & Scissors to cut

- Black fabric paint & Sponge for application

Draw a simple call out shape to fit your t-shirt, and cut it out.

Iron on to your t-shirt.  Make sure you gets good seal on the inside edges to avoid any bleeding.

Apply 2 coats of black paint on the template, allowing time to dry between each coat.  I used fabric paint for these, as its quite flexible even when dry, but you can actually use blackboard or black paint, and it works just as well, provided you seal it in with a hot iron.  (Though normal paint can be a little bit scratchy to wear)

N.b You should place something inside the t-shirt to stop bleeding through to the back of the t-shirt.  Old cardboard or a few sheets of newspaper would be fine.

Once the paint is dry, you need to remove the freezer paper template (very satisfying peeling it off), and iron the paint to set.  Place a tea towel over the paint, and iron on a hot setting.

You could stop there, but I used puffy paint to write each of the girls names on their t-shirt.  At the party, each girl was given a piece of chalk to write their message.

All the girls wore their t-shirts at the party.  (Check out that cute micro pig!)

The chalk comes off in the washing machine, or with a damp cloth, so you can redo the message any time.
